AN INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

NTE Bondtite and Aqua Tech Switzerland embarked on a joint project to create a viable natural alternative to synthetic coagulants for industry. The result is Lucent, a wattle-extract solution that has been proven to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of industrial water treatment.

DISADVANTAGES OF SYNTHETICS

Industrial water treatment is necessary to remove contaminants and impurities from water used in various industrial processes. One of the key steps in this treatment process is coagulation, which involves the addition of chemicals to water to destabilize suspended particles and make them easier to remove. Traditionally, synthetic coagulants like aluminum sulfate (alum) and ferric chloride have been used for this purpose.

Synthetics have several disadvantages, the most important being that they are often produced using energy-intensive and environmentally harmful processes, and they can persist in the environment long after their use in water treatment, potentially causing harm to aquatic ecosystems. Some synthetic coagulants, such as aluminum-based compounds, have also been associated with health concerns when present in drinking water at elevated concentrations.

THE BENEFITS OF WATTLE TANNINS

The use of natural coagulants offers the potential to be an environmentally friendly alternative. Wattle tannins are ideal because they are derived from a fast-growing and low-impact tree that is fully sustainable. Natural coagulants of this kind are biodegradable and do not leave behind persistent residues, minimising their impact on the environment, and they offer less of a risk to human health. The shift to renewable coagulants promises to greatly reduce the environmental footprint of industrial water treatment.

The cooperation between NTE and Aqua Tech has aimed to improve the consistency and effectiveness of our natural tannins for water treatment, and Lucent has now been certified by [X].

RECOMMENDED TESTING PROTOCOL

preparation
  • Prepare a Lucent stock solution (1%; 10 000ppm) by,
  • Adding Lucent (1ml) to stirring clean tap water (99ml) and
  • Continue to stir until ready to use (10 – 40 min)
  • Use this stock solution for test work for the day
  • Make fresh solutions daily
sample collection
  • Collect 100-200ml representative samples from source
  • Complete the Testing Procedure below on the samples
  • Test the samples against an untreated reference sample, from the same source, as a control
testing procedure
  • Stir the water sample to ensure a homogeneous suspension
  • Add Lucent coagulant stock solution (1ml; 100ppm)
  • Stir to distribute the coagulant
  • Monitor the coagulation process
  • Adjust as necessary by adding Lucent stock solution (1ml) at a time.
