NTE demonstrates a strong commitment to the conservation of the endangered Wattled Crane in KwaZulu-Natal. This magnificent bird, Africa’s largest crane, faces significant threats due to habitat loss and degradation.
The Wattled Crane, with its striking white neck, grey back, and distinctive red wattles, relies on undisturbed, high-altitude wetlands and grasslands. These habitats, often found on privately owned farmland, are crucial for the crane’s survival. NTE actively supports local conservation bodies working to protect these vital areas.
Historically widespread, the Wattled Crane’s range has shrunk, now concentrated in the eastern highlands of South Africa, particularly KZN and Mpumalanga. Key protected sites like Umgeni and Ntsikeni Vlei provide crucial refuges, but the species remains vulnerable.
NTE’s contributions to local conservation efforts are vital in engaging landowners and promoting responsible land management practices. This collaboration helps ensure the preservation of these critical habitats, securing a future for the Wattled Crane in KZN.
